This course will offer an introduction to the portrait of the artist in Canadian literature and film produced over the last century, including works from English Canada, Nunavut, and Quebec. Focusing on the figure of the artist (writer, musician, actor, or storyteller) will allow us to explore some of the traditions (both European and Aboriginal) and mythologies that surround the figure of the artist, as well as, more specifically, defining moments in the cultural history of twentieth-century Canada and the changing perceptions of the role of the arts in society.
